Accessibility at the Library
The Port Moody Public Library is committed to providing accessible and inclusive library services for our patrons. This page provides information and updates on the Library's actions towards implementing the requirements of the Accessible British Columbia Act.
The Accessible British Columbia Act outlines provincial regulations on how to better identify, remove, and prevent barriers to individuals with disabilities in our communities. We will work towards improving accessibility at our Library, including:
- Participating in an accessibility advisory committee
- Developing an accessibility plan
- Providing an opportunity for patrons to make recommendations on how to improve inclusivity and access in the Library
The Port Moody Public Library seeks a community-led process towards improving access and inclusion. The Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC) comprises of:
- Port Moody Public Library staff
- InterLINK library staff
- Members of the public with lived experience
- An Indigenous member of the community
- Other members who reflect the diversity of persons in British Columbia
The AAC will meet several times throughout the year to collaboratively discuss strategies to improve access and inclusivity at the library. The goals of this committee are:
- To provide guidance and recommendations on the Accessibility Plan
- To identify barriers to accessibility in local public libraries and recommend ways to remove and prevent them
- To improve accessibility and inclusivity in our libraries
- To obtain feedback from the community about accessibility, and to provide advice on responses to the feedback received
As part of the Accessibility Advisory Committee (AAC), the Port Moody Public Library has worked towards developing a three-year accessibility plan that considers the following principles:
- inclusion
- adaptability
- diversity
- collaboration
- self-determination
- universal design
Current accessibility features at the Library include:
- Adjustable desks for print release station and the Library catalogue
- Designated accessible parking in the front and the back of the Library
- Low service counters at the Information Desk
- Accessible washrooms
- Power operated doors
